Fehu is the first rune of the first Aett. It leads you to first think of the mundane possessions needed for day to day living, keeping in mind it is hard to concentrate on the spiritual aspects of life when there is hunger and lack in the mundane world.
But never be satisfied with just mundane life. The spiritual side of life must be sought to complete and round out our lives. Fehu gives us a glimpse of the possibilities of life on both the mundane and spiritual levels and gives us a base to move forward from.
The mundane meaning of Fehu is cattle. In ancient times, cattle was a sign of the amount of wealth a person had. The wealthier people would have multiple cows but the poorest people might not have any. This is the wealth connection that aligns Fehu with the first Aett. It is also there because cattle was a necessity in ancient times. They could mean the difference between survival or death during winter if food store ran out.
When Fehu appears in a reading and is right side up, it is a sign of financial or social increase. Those that have been experiencing lack should see things changes soon. This increase could come in the form of money or material goods. Finances will improve and where there was lack there will now be abundance. Possessions can increase and if the increase is dramatic, there could be new friends and acquaintances to deal with as you social standing improves.
When Fehu is Merkstave (reverses) in a reading it is a warning. Now is not the time to enter into contracts with others. The chance of failure in any venture is great at this time. Those in business for themselves could see loss of business, property or merchandise and it may well be through your mishandling. It is also a sign of possible burnout, discord, stupidity or atrophy in your life. Seek ways to lessen or prevent these things in your life.
Use Fehu in magic any time you need to achieve a goal or want to ensure the success of your business. If you need help in finding a job or getting a promotion, magic using this rune is called for. Fehu is a great rune for use in any magic involving money, whether making it or keeping it is your goal.
