Psychic Skills
The following list of the various types of psychic skills will never be 100% complete. We humans have a constant desire to place labels upon things and people from various cultures tend to put varying labels on things which often leads to confusion as to what the proper term is for a specific skill.
As time allows and as we have members from various cultures join our group, we hope to grow this list with cross references between names that are more a cultural difference that a physical one. Of course we will also fine tune our definitions when additional information becomes available.
We urge you to not get hung up on terminology. The name of something rarely matters, it is the ability, the type of psychic skills that should take the fore front. All types of psychic skills involve one common denominator, the brain. Anyone who has a brain, can have psychic skills.
Most people tend to have more than one psychic skill. It is not unusual for someone to have a desire to develop one skill, yet a completely different skill blossoms. Many times these other skills go unnoticed, so it is important to accept whatever skills you are gifted with, work with them when ever possible because it may well lead to the development of additional skills as you become more involved.
People can get extremely up tight about simple differences in terminology. I have seen hundreds of arguments over the differences between telekinesis and psychokinesis. Please do not allow yourself to get caught up in these battles. I have actually left many forums because they spent more time worrying about what to call a specific skill, than actually helping people to develop their skills.
When you are talking about psychic skills, rarely will a person show abilities in only 1 skill. In fact, by the time people are ready to retire, many of them have advanced to showing abilities in most of the various types of skills. It is fine to work toward a specific skill, but if that specific skill you want does not materialize, don't give up. You might need nothing more than to become proficient in a different skill and you will suddenly find your abilities in the first skills will start to awaken.
Even in the worst case scenario type of situation, if you never develop the specific skill you actually wanted, do not all it to keep you from accepting the skills that do develop. Your psychic skills are a gift, they should be treated with respect and use to help others, no matter what name you choose to put on that particular skill.
- Astral Projection - Removing one's spirit form from the body and traveling to another location via the astral plane.
- Aura Reading - The skill to see/feel the energy field that surrounds all living things.
- Automatic Writing - The skill to allow the subconscious mind to communicate via direct control of a writing instrument held in the hand.
- Channeling - The skill to allow other beings to communicate via your voice.
- Clairaudience - Any type of "knowing" that involves the hearing, without physically hearing. In other words, the subject(s) involved in creating the sounds could be on the other side of the earth from the person "hearing" the communication.
- Clairvoyance - The skill to see the unseeable. Can involve seeing the past, present or future events.
- Clairsentience - A "knowing" of hidden events. Can involved "knowing" past, present or future events.
- Divination - An umbrella term under which all types of "knowing" (whether via sight, sound, touch) past, present or future events are housed.
- Dowsing - The use of pendulums, rods or sticks to locate water or lost objects.
- Empathy - The ability to sense or feel the emotions and needs of others.
- E.S.P. - Often used as an umbrella term to cover many forms of psychic abilities. Known as Extra Sensory Perception.
- Intuition - A "knowing" of hidden events, often used interchangeably with the term clairsentience.
- Levitation - The ability to cause objects or ones own body to hover above the ground without the use of any type of lifting mechanism.
- Precognition - The ability to know the future if those involved stay upon the path they are currently on. It should be noted that the future is not static. Changes can be made today that will change the future that has been foreseen.
- Psychometry - The ability to sense, read or interpret the energy signals left on an item by someone that has dealt with the item in the past.
- Pyrokinesis - The ability to start fires with one's mind.
- Scrying - One of the tools used by some persons to bring precognitive abilities to the surface.
- Telekinesis - The ability to move objects with your mind. Often used interchangeably with the term psychokinesis, however psychokinesis is actually the umbrella term under which all the various "kinesises" resides.
- Telepathy - Often called mind reading. Can be one person reading another's mind or mind to mind communication between two people.
