Concentration Exercises
The ability to concentrate, to bring your focus down to almost pin point accuracy and tune out all the minor annoyances of the world is perhaps the most important ability to learn to increase your psychic abilities. Thankfully you can increase this ability by practicing some simple concentration exercises.
Think about the way you concentrate during your day to day activities. You may be speaking with someone, at work or at home, but your mind is not fully focused on the conversation. You may be thinking about what else you need to do today, or how much longer till you have to leave to pick up the kids. Our society has become so complicated it is almost impossible to find times when you can be completely focused on any one subject for more than just a few moments at a time. If you can spend just 5 to 10 minutes a day working with the concentration exercises on this page, you will find your paychic abilities start to increase along with your concentration abilities.
To stay on top in the everyday world you need to balance multiple tasks all at once and be ready to switch from one mode to the next at a moments notice. The ways of the world, rarely mesh completely with any type of spiritual work and psychic abilities are no different. For it is this inability to stay focused that holds many people back from becoming the psychic they are meant to be.
It is important however to not berate yourself when you find that your mind is wandering. That wandering is the result of years of training and it will take some effort to retrain your mind to remain focused. But being rough with yourself is not being supportive of yourself. Rather than being upset with yourself, simply accept that you can do better and bring your attention back to your exercise. Allow the other thoughts to float away so they no longer affect you. Do not focus on the other thoughts for any reason. To do so only allows them to keep part of your attention and your goal with these concentration exercises is to take back control of your ability to concentrate.
The concentration exercises on this page are designed to help you learn to keep your mind on a single thought or subject. As you practice these exercises, they should become natural to you. Do not try to force results. Simply allow it to happen and be thankful and excited when it happens as you intended it to happen, and let it go and move on when it does not go your way .
Each day, you should put some effort into increasing your ability to concentrate. Most of the concentration exercises on this page can be done in less than 5 minutes so if you are serious about increasing your psychic abilities, you should be able to find at least 5 minutes a day to do one of the exercises.
Don't choose just one of the concentration exercises and forget about all the others. Change the exercise you are attempting to do on a regular basis. This helps to build a more well rounded, overall ability instead of a static, unchangeable ability.
Rarely will you need to practice more than 15 to 30 minutes in any one session and most of the time 5 to 10 minutes will be fine. If you find yourself getting a headaches, stop practicing. You are doing things wrong or you have been practicing too much because there should be no pain involved practicing these concentration exercises. Most of the time, if you develop a headache it is because you are trying too hard. You are trying to force results rather than simply allowing results to happen and the vast majority of the time, this leads to failure.
Track your results. Anyone on a path to developing their psychic abilities should keep a journal of what they do and the results they received. This includes your concentration exercises and any attempts to use your psychic abilities also. You can hide your journal from everyone else so you can take note of thoughts, impressions, ideas and such that may come to mind without having to worry about someone else reading them. You never know when a thought that seemed completely random will suddenly make complete and total sense and you will need to review what was happening at the time you received the thought. This can give you insight into how you personally receive information and make your abilities that much stronger.
It is not necessary to keep a long, formal documentation of your efforts. Simply the date, time and what you did will be fine. But feel free to write any extra information you think may be important.
A few of the concentration exercises may require a few additional tools. It is a good idea to have a few basics on hand and since most of them can be found in the average household, it is no big deal to have them available. I suggest you have your journal, pen and paper to keep score, a timer and a deck of cards are the most common items you need to have available.
Before You Start
Before you start a concentration exercise, it is important that you get into a relaxed and quiet state. This is often called grounding and centering. There are any number of ways you can accomplish this and if you have a favorite way you normally use, feel free to use it. For those that are new to this, feel free to use the following simple, method.
Begin by finding a quiet place where you can sit or lay down in a comfortable position without being interrupted for the amount of time you intend to practice. It is best to turn your cell phone off and make sure you put the cat and/or dog out of the room. I am not sure what it is but animals are attracted to the energies you give off in an altered state and there is nothing more shocking than having a cold nose stuck in your face just when you are deeply involved in a meditation.
When you are ready, relax your entire body. Inhale deeply through your nose and as you exhale from your mouth, allow all the tension in your body to blow out of your mouth. Do this several times, each time allowing more and more of the tension to leave your body.
Continue until you feel completely relaxed and at ease. That is all there is to it.
So without further ado, let's get started on the exercises.
Word Focus Concentration Exercise
You may have heard it said that we are our own worst enemies. When working to increase your concentration abilities, that statement is exceptionally true. The human mind does not like to be controlled and concentration is nothing more than using your will to control your thoughts. It sounds easy but with todays hectic world, the truth of the matter is few people can actually concentrate completely on a single subject for more than a few seconds.
You have to take charge of your mind. You have to bring it under the control of your will. You can learn to tune out everything around you and remain focused on a single item or thought for 5, 10 even 15 minutes or more, but it requires effort on your part to make it happen.
For this exercise, pick a book at random. If you don't have any books in your house, a magazine that has articles or a newspaper will work just fine.
Choose 1 paragraph from within the book and using nothing but your eyes, count the number of words within that paragraph. Do not use your finger to follow along with the words as you count them. Use nothing but your eyes. After you have counted them, count them a second time to make sure you got it correct.
The exercise should not take more than 5 minutes or so to complete and can be done almost anywhere. In fact, as your ability to focus on the number of words increases, it is a good idea to practice in various surroundings, such as at the mall, or near a busy street. Anywhere where traffic or people are moving around you so you can learn to tune them out and concentrate in almost any situation.
When you reach the point where you can easily accomplish counting a single paragraph, increase it to 2 paragraphs and continue to increase the amount of words you are counting until you can easily count an entire page without breaking your concentration.
Number Concentration Exercise
The only tools needed for this exercise is a pen and paper for score keeping and a timer or watch with a second hand to time your results.
There are 2 goals with this exercise. To improve your concentration and to begin the journey of finding the number that you personally resonate with. Don't worry if you do not understand what resonate with the number means. As you develop your psychic abilities you will come to understand the concept quiet well.
Start with the number one for your first session. Stay with this number through the entire session. At the next session you can work with a new number, but keep each session limited to a single number.
Close your eyes and see within your minds eye the number 1 floating in front of your vision. See the number as being something real, not just a thought. See it's height and width. See its color. Your goal is to see nothing but this number and to think of nothing but this number as long as possible.
If you find additional thoughts starting to come into your mind, gently push them away and continue to concentrate on the number. If you find you can not keep the other thoughts away, stop the exercise and make note of the amount of time you worked in this session.
Be honest with your assessment of yourself. Don't write that you concentrated for 20 minutes when you thought more on what is going to happen tomorrow than on the number you were concentrating on. MOST PEOPLE can not concentrate more than a minute or two when they start. It is not unusual for people to rarely make it past 15 seconds in the early stages. It is fine if that is all you can do.
Just track where you are at now and then work toward slowly but surely increasing the time you can remain focused on nothing but the number you are working with. You will get better with practice.
Focused Breathing Concentration Exercise
For this concentration exercise, the only tools you need are a small plain object you can focus on and a plain backdrop for the object. A small "post it' note on a blank white wall works perfectly, or a push pin in the wall works too. Your main goal is to make sure you have at least several feet of blank area around the object you have chosen.
Start by using your preferred method of getting relaxed. When you are ready, look at your chosen object. Concentrate on the object until you can tune out everything else in the room. Don't try to examine the object, simply see it. If you try to examine the object, thoughts of words that describe what you are seeing will come into your mind and you goal is to no think of anything.
When you have been able to tune out the remainder of the room, slowly breathe in till your lungs are filled from top to bottom. This is not the normal way most people breathe and your concentration on the object will probably break off. That is fine, but return your focus on the object, and then exhale completely.
Again it will probably be hard to keep your concentration on nothing but the object because the form of breathing is not natural to you and it take effort to make it happen. But try to keep your concentration on the object and allow the deep breathing to become natural, so that you do it without having to break your concentration.
This is not an easy exercise and chance are very good you will fail the first several times you try it. Don't give up. You are training your body to deal with things in your environment without breaking your concentration and you will see a huge increase in your psychic abilities when you are able to easily do this exercise.
Do not worry if it takes you many weeks or even months to master this exercise. It is not easy and only a very few people will manage to complete this concentration exercise in a short period of time.
